Unnamed Waterfalls

I took a half day trip to a small native brookie creek that I’ve fished on a couple other occasions. I decided to check out a new section below where I previously fished. From scouting on topo maps, I knew the trip would involve climbing up an unnamed waterfall or 2.

I located a “hidden” trail that I think is primarily used for bear hunters in the area. This trail intersects with a very old logging trail but ultimately brought me to a bluff that over looked a beautiful falls.

After spending a moment admiring the scenery, I worked my way down to the base of the falls. Unfortunately, due to our current drought, there wasn’t really a desirable pool to fish.. so I climbed above. The rocks were slick and the climb was a bit sketchy but i was able to make it unscathed.

The fishing over the next quarter mile was a bit slow. I spotted a single pair of boot tracks that looked recent, so I decided to move quickly to a higher stretch of water. After losing the boot tracks at a higher point, I really got into some beautiful brookies. Spooking fish was the biggest issue of the day. The weary specs have a tremendous ability to spot potential danger, especially during extremely low water.

I worked maybway all the way back up to ~4100’ and a stretch that I love. When I was able to get a dry fly on the water in deeper holes (without spooking) the brookies, I would get anaggressive take from the “pool boss” nearly everytime. There are some great pocket water and plunge pools stretches. This is a creek I’ll always make my way back to from time to time!

There are days on the water that remind me why I love fishing. Days when everything clicks — the read, the cast, the drift — and the creek gives back more than I put in. This was one of those days. Wo
